Narrative Experience Essay Being a foreign student whose first language is Chinese, I had a hard time pushing myself into the world of English. I started to learn English at age six, which is rather a young age for Chinese to study a second language. At that time, English only meant the alphabet to me. I felt quite easy playing with my 24 friends all day long. However, I planned to escape from the English world when I met grammar, vocabulary and sentence structures. I tried my best to memorize the grammars, to use the various different kinds of vocabularies. Nevertheless, what I wrote still looked boring; lacked content and theme. It was just like having all the right pieces for a puzzle called English Composition, but the process was so hard that I did not know where to put each of them to get the final picture. Like a baby who falls via learning how to walk, I totally had no idea how to walk on a road called academic writing. To be specific, I â€Å"fell† every time I wrote argumentative essay. Last year, as a foreign student who wanted to study abroad, I need to attend a language test called TOEFL. Writing an argumentative essay is a part of the test. An argumentative essay should consist of a mean topic and several logical theses to support the mean theme. I memorized this instruction but felt rather confusing. I had no problem clarifying which sentence should be the topic but was bad at giving detailed arguments. When I did a simulative test for the first time, I was required to write my opinions about homeschooling. Suddenly plenty of stories about homeschooling came up to my minds. â€Å"Well, it is just like a piece of cake since I can use the story from Helen Keller, Edison and etc.! † I told myself while writing down four stories about homeschooling. However, I only got 10 out of 30 for my first try. I was shocked by the comment, â€Å"Lacking clear theses to develop the topic. Although there are several beautiful sentence structures, there is no connection between each sentence. † said by the English teacher. To be honest, I am also bad at writing compositions in my mother tongue, Chinese. Not being logical is a problem existing both in my Chinese and English composition. It is a problem about my way of thinking indeed. I could hardly find a proper way to learn how to writing an argumentative essay and I paused around the starting point. In order to understand how to write English compositions and get a better score, I took a summer course for preparing for the TOEFL test. It was when I met my god of logic, who totally changed my attitude towards English composition. He is my writing teacher Brian. Brian never used a textbook, what he need was just a marker and a blackboard. His syllabus was never about what we would learn each day but full of topics. I still remember he wrote â€Å"automobile† on the blackboard for the first class. â€Å"Trust me; we can finish a 1000-word essay about this topic within the next 2 hours. † Then he said. â€Å"One thousand?! † I repeated. At that time, I thought he was bragging because it was just the first composition class. And based on my understanding, we were supposed to study some words and sentence structures which can be used as templates rather than looking at a topic. Hence, I turned to be curious about what he was going to say next. I had a strange feeling that I would gain something special from him. â€Å"What will people usually think of when talking about automobile? † He continued without pausing, â€Å"The history of automobile. † †The concept of automobile,† students replied. â€Å"Then, let us Google a definition for automobile to start this topic,† he opened the monitor and typed the word while speaking. The prior choice was the definition from Wikipedia, â€Å"An automobile is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. † He used it as the first sentence. He went on capturing another sentence illustrating the history of automobile just from the same page. â€Å"Ok, since automobile has such a long history as we can see from the second sentence, what can you think of after it? † â€Å"It must have brought lots of changes to the daily life of our people! † I replied naturally, â€Å"Bravo! So girl, give me some more details that you can think of,† He moved to my front and start to ask me constantly. Well, we can travel to some place we have never been to and we can start off whenever we want! † â€Å"Give me an example! † While I was telling him the story after my father bought his first car, he turned back to the blackboard and wrote down what I had just said. I started to be much interested in what he would ask next since this was definitely a new teaching method to me. Brian interacted with us during the whole two hours. Dramatically, we really finished a 1000-word draft at the end. I totally could not believe it and continued looking at the blackboard filling with all the sentences we came up with during the two hours. They are just the stories and ideas from our brains. In my view, they are just what we would say when chatting with others. Brian used a magic rope to tie them up and change them into a composition! â€Å"Being logical is not that hard. The only thing we need to do is connecting your sentences while spreading out your topic. Every time you wrote down a sentence, ask yourself, ’what do I think of it,’ ‘what should I write next. ’† Brian said at the end of the class. I used to be busy searching for fancy but meaningless words or skillful but useless phrases without knowing why I use it. Hence, my essay had no logic and no content. It is just a bunch of irrelevant sentences. Just like a chic lady without a clear face. Brian used simple questions to lead my logic and develop the theme of the essay naturally. Every sentence in the draft suddenly made sense to me. I had no problem understanding the connection between two sentences and why we need to give examples for explaining the benefits of automobile. The method of inquiry lifts me to another level of understanding what literacy is. At first, I though literacy was just about different types of writing formats, like narratives, argument essays, poetry, etc.. But I deny them all now. In my point of view, making sense is the priority. If a passage lacks logic, we can learn nothing from it although we read numerous difficult sentences. Since then, no matter what kind of essay I am required to write, I start from the words and sentences which make sense to me. Then I follow the instruction to modify them. Yes, I see my door to the world of English. I want to end my literary experience with an interesting story happened last week, my brother Dill asked me to help him with his TOEFL composition. As I was reading his draft, all the old memories of my learning process just came back. This time, I had a clear purpose. While modifying each thesis and point arguing about what the mobile has brought to our daily life, I just used what my teacher, Brian told me to do. I know I should ask myself the connection between each sentence from the beginning. My brother started his essay with a story about his first cellphone. But I think it would be clearer if he pointed out his theme first and use this story as an argument example. Although it has been a year since I took the TOEFL course, this method for literary writing is just like what I just learnt yesterday. Writing an argumentative essay does not seem to be a barrier to me anymore.

The book's chapters are comprised of how to handle people, how to be a successful leader, and how to win people to your way of thinking. The preface provides several ideas and suggestions that will help the reader get the most out of the book. The author suggests that the reader keep an open mind, and also suggest some other reading materials that will also help.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first chapter deals with how to handle people successfully. In this chapter it highlights one of the most important things you can do when dealing with people and their particular situation is to rationalize with them, meaning that to better understand were the person is coming from you must put yourself in their shoes. Every one can and will rationalize why they make the decisions they make. People like the infamous Al Capone never thought he was a bad person. He had rationalized the actions he took and the decisions he made. This is a good example to lead into the first principle, which is that no one should ever critize, complain, or condemn other people. Principe two suggests that you always give people or sincere appreciation. You shouldn?t sit and think about your own individual accomplishments and successes, but compliment others on their successes. The most important thing that others can give is their genuine appreciation. That is the key to getting w hat you want, threatening people by force or harsh words, but to get others to do what you want is to give them what they want; appreciation for their deeds. Principle three explains that most people do not care what you want. They care mostly for themselves and are not really interested in what you want. The key is to expose them on how what you want will also benefit them; it establishes eagerness and willingness in the other people. A good example of this is fishing, you don?t bait the hook with what you want to eat, you bait the hook with what the fish want. Again, thinking from the other side?s perspective.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The second part of the book discusses ways on how to get people to like you. The first step is to become genuinely interested in them. People are more apt to like you if they feel admired by you. One must inst... ... rather than themselves making there own reputation. If you give a person a good reputation they will try their hardest to live up to the expectation and Dale suggest that they will very rarely let you down.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I choose this book for my report because for one I started reading it last year but until now never had finished it. The other reason is because through out all my classes in the recreation department I have always been told of the importance of making contacts along the way. This book is an excellent tool in dealing with how to make the very best first impression, especially when the encounter might only last a few seconds. In this industry everyone is tring to get a head often times their own way. The principles in this book give detailed examples of how to work together and win people over to the ideas you have. Perhaps more importantly these techniques allow you to get ahead as a team in a industry that is so competitive. The things I have learned in this book I have already found myself in situations where I am applying Dale?s concepts. This book will be an important tool in my life and everyone in every industry should do themselves a favor and read this boo k.

Often times mothers can be pushy, annoying, and a bit overbearing but in the long run they always just want what is best for their child. Everyone wants their child to be the best, most popular and overall number one. In Amy Tan’s short story â€Å"Two Kinds† we see this type of fame hungry mother. The short story is about a Chinese family who lost everything. The mother had lost her entire family full of children except for the one in the story. With the belief â€Å"you could be anything you want in America† (Tan 305) in mind the mother set off to find what her child can do. This ultimately will resort in disappointment for both the mother and child, as they do not share the same goals throughout the short story. My initial personal interpretation of this piece is that the mother wants to live vicariously through her daughter. This was proven throughout the story time and time again. Through further thought, different literary techniques, and class discu ssion I became aware of an alternate interpretation of the story. This is that their are two kinds of daughters and the way the mother daughter relationship could be. Question: Grey (2013), amongst others, argues that the differences between scientific management and the human relations approach are tactical and that both are pursuing the same ends. Critically compare and contrast these two schools of management thought? Answer: Introduction: Organizational Behavior can be defined as a discipline which is concerned with various aspects of human behavior in an organization. This field mainly highlights on group dynamics and forecasts how individuals participate in a team and should work together. In this type of environment individuals exercise leadership and organizational change is highlighted here. Sometimes Organization Behavior is also known as a theory which is directly specified by the management of an organization. Organizational Behavior have emerged since US Civil war in the early 20th century (Processes, 2015). The study Of Organizational Behavior is very challenging and interesting too. It depends on the behavior of the employees working that they are asked to deliver in terms of their behavior. OB is a social system that affects organization structure, group as well as individual behavior. Organization Behavior studies each and every aspect of group as well as individual perspectives and compares it with other organizations. There are two aspects of Organization behavior, one is micro and the other one is macro. There are various responsibilities of management that is linked to tem building, decision making, leadership and strategies of an organization (Introduction to Organization Behavior, 2015). Scientific School of Management Scientific school of management is a management theory that was developed by F.W. Taylor in the year 1880. This school helps to enhance labor productivity and thus increases the economy of the country. This model is also known seen from the classical perspective of Taylorism (Darwish, 2013). In the year 1909, Taylor published The Principles of Scientific Management. In this school of management Taylor proposed that productivity could be increased if the jobs are more simplified and optimized. Here the workers and managers were asked to cooperate with each other. Workers did not earn any incentives from the work and there was no motivation at work. Taylor believed that money was the main motivator to work so he introduced the idea of a fair days pay for a fair days work. This means if a worker did not work enough then he was not entitled to pay (Cliffsnotes.com, 2015). Human Relations Approach to Management: Human relations basically deal with the analysis of human nature, peoples issues that occur due to organizational and interpersonal relationships. This approach stands to be very critical part for an organizations success. This approach was coined by Elton Mayo and his colleague Fritz Roethlisberger from Harvard University (Witzel, 2011). This study constituted about Hawthorne experiments which were conducted at the Western Electric factory in Chicago. The study depicted that lighting levels would have an impact on productivity of the workers and they thought that more light would increase more productivity of the workers (Accel-team.com, 2015). Later on they realized that lighting had no impact on workers performance. Instead they saw that the presence of researchers on the field allowed more employee productivity. They also decided to evaluate on the rest periods and hours of work of the workers. Later on they came up with a conclusion that it was because of the attitudes of the employees that there was an increase in the work productivity of the employees. The findings of the study were known as the Hawthorne Effect. Difference between the two approaches:- The Comparison and contrast is based on the workers thoughts and viewpoints that differs from individual to individual. The differences also depends on the way that how they control the workforce so that they can accomplish their task accordingly. If there is availability of proper coordination and effective on job relations then individuals can work even under high pressure. It is always believed that an organization always depends on mutual cooperation and coordination; there must be a two way interaction present in the organization. It is also necessary for the management to stay alert about the psychological needs of individuals. There should not be any dominancy by the higher authority (Bauer, 2015). Orders are meant for execution. It is to be clearly understood that the subordinates are to give them tasks and not orders and the workers are meant to execute them. The major differences can be illustrated in the following points: Human Relations Model emerged in the social era on where there is involvement of government and the economy and the classical management theory of Taylor was developed to lower the efficiencies of large scale production which had availability of presence of immigrant workforce who were not so qualified. The human relations model had a stable environment while the classical management theory had mostly implicit assumptions. Human approach forwarded their work by building cooperative systems for efficiency. While the scientific school had the control for efficiency. The human relations school had informal relations with their workers while the scientific school of management had structural organization design and job enrichment for workers were provided (Nature Of management, 2015). Arguments related to human relations approach: The work of Elton Mayo was always considered to be supported by scientific management. Taylor applied science to his school of management so that economic efficiency could be achieved and that can also increase labor productivity. There were many arguments related to human relation approach. It was argued that the role that Elton Mayo played was controversial, and he depicted to be the founder of this management thought. Some experts believed that it was already used much before the Hawthorne experiments. Researchers like Nyland and Bruce identified a similar concept to that of human relations much before Elton Mayo did. It was also believed that there was another name that was pre attributed for human relation model and that is of Henry S. Dennison. There was a nexus that was created between Taylorism and human relation thought (Rose, 2015). The scientific management and Taylorism, as explained by F.W. Taylor, was a complete mental revolution. This thought specified its managers to work with zeal of perfection to work so that all the organizational problems could be assessed. This study also used qualitative data to select employees at work. Secondly Taylor introduced work productivity through depicting the behavior of employees. How Scientific School of Management and Human Relations Management are strategic to an organization:- The management theories always supported the existence of organizations and also exercises control over other aspects in the organization as well. It also accounts to use the resources very effectively and in a coordinated manner so that maximum productivity can be achieved. There should also be minimization of waste for the resources. It is also believed that strategic management and corporate strategy play an important role to determine the approaches of management. It is important to analyze the current business position in the environment and that should create a benchmark for better identification. To evaluate the external environment PESTLE analysis can be used to understand strategic decisions of an organization and how it affects the overall business (David, 2005). The approach of scientific school of management is trying to merge with other business functions. The human relations model was the main motivation for the employees apart from Maslow and Herzbergs schemes of motivation. This also affected the remuneration system of the employees which made the task of the employees more challenging and strategic to endure high performance in the organizations. Conclusion: The early approaches to study management such as the scientific approach and human relations are said to be important sources of modern school of management. Scientific management theory states how efficient the workers should be in terms of the production process. It also focused to achieve employee satisfaction and other behavioral aspects of the employees in the organization. Modern school of management also provides insights to help them to be more effective and relevant in terms of the day to day work. The scientific school of thought also allowed a leader to perform all the duties under him itself. It also focused to maintain coordination and cooperation to assist in developing the personal development of employees in an organization. Whereas in the human relations, Mayo depicted that workers were more comfortable with greater acceptance of work and that helped employees to attain motivation. The scientific school of thought also supported the organizational growth keeping view not to hamper individual growth as well. It provided more importance to the workers.
